Chemical spill at Arkansas factory causes evacuation

A recent chemical spill and subsequent fire at a factory in Maumelle, Arkansas, that produces fake fingernails led to road blocks and a small-scale evacuation of people in the area, reports Arkansas Online.

According to the news source, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management official Renee Preslar said 40,000 gallons of chemical solvent acetone spilled at the Onyx Corporation facility. There have been no reports of injuries as a result of the spill, the news provider said.

The fire resulting from the chemical spill reportedly began in the morning, with firefighters still working to put it out two hours later. In addition to fire crews, a hazmat team with the Pulaski County Office of Emergency Management arrived on the scene, according to Fire Lieutenant Gary Williams.

The specific cause of the fire was not immediately known, but Onyx workers reportedly said they evacuated the building upon noticing the blaze.

An area around the business, located in the city’s industrial park, was reportedly cleared following the incident, the news source said.
