Chemical spill closes Highway 2 in Lincoln, NE

An accident on Highway 2 in Lincoln, Nebraska, involving two large trucks caused a hazardous chemical to leak onto the roadway, the Associated Press reports.

The chemical spill occurred when a semi-truck carrying 16 250-gallon tanks of boiler cleaner hit a large flatbed truck on Saturday, May 12, 2012, reports the source. One of the tanks on the semi-truck ruptured and the solution began pouring onto the highway.

The westbound lanes of Highway 2 were closed for the entirety of the afternoon as cleanup crews worked to contain and remove the chemical from the environment.

There was concern the vapors from the chemical would create additional safety risks, but no one was hurt as a result of the caustic spill.

In sensitive cases, where chemicals have leaked onto roadways, Hazmat officials need to respond quickly and efficiently to the scene. It may be worthwhile to come armed with the FiberLink Hazmat Economy Spill Kit, as it provides users with a plethora of absorbent products. Each kit includes XSORB Hazmat Absorbent Socks, Hazmat Yellow Light-weight Sorbent Pads, yellow disposal bags, Hazmat labels, protective gloves, mask and safety goggles. When chemicals need to be controlled, this kit can handle the job.
