An accident on Highway 2 in Lincoln, Nebraska, involving two large trucks caused a hazardous chemical to leak onto the roadway, the Associated Press reports.
The chemical spill occurred when a semi-truck carrying 16 250-gallon tanks of boiler cleaner hit a large flatbed truck on Saturday, May 12, 2012, reports the source. One of the tanks on the semi-truck ruptured and the solution began pouring onto the highway.
The westbound lanes of Highway 2 were closed for the entirety of the afternoon as cleanup crews worked to contain and remove the chemical from the environment.
There was concern the vapors from the chemical would create additional safety risks, but no one was hurt as a result of the caustic spill.
