Employees at a Portland, Oregon, dairy plant saw the impact of a chemical spill, when a leak occurred on May 30, 2012, and sickened 11 workers, The Associated Press reports.
The spill occurred when 450 gallons of acid were accidentally removed from a truck and added to a tank that held 1,150 gallons of a caustic liquid. According to the news source, a chemical reaction led the combined liquids to seep into the ground, causing some areas to reach 150 degrees.
Portland Fire & Rescue representative Paul Corah told the news source that 11 people displayed respiratory symptoms after the spill. None of those impacted suffered life-threatening conditions.
