Hydraulic fluid spilled into Big Chico Creek in California from a nearby construction site, causing the closure of the nearby Sycamore Pool at the One-Mile Recreation Area.
The Chico Enterprise-Record, reports that workers for Viking Construction – which was contracted by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) – were driving in posts as part of the Highway 99 expansion project when a hose snapped off a piece of equipment, sending the hydraulic fluid into the creek.
Brian Steiner, a Caltans assistant resident engineer, told the Orion said that crews were fast to respond to the incident.
“Everyone jumped on it quickly,” he said. “It’s an accident. It’s just one of those things that happens.”
A California Department of Fish and Game official told the Enterprise-Record that inspections of the creek and potentially affected waterways were being conducted and the test results are pending.
