Derailed tanker train spills methanol, forces home evacuations in South Carolina

South Carolina officials evacuated more than 50 homes after a 28-car tanker train derailment in Abbeville on March 8, 2012, according to WSPA-TV. Local authorities have begun environmental cleanup in the area by removing a derailed tanker car carrying methanol, a hazardous chemical.

The news source reports on-site monitoring teams are managing the area with the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control. No release of toxic materials has impacted the environment, but residents living near the accident were removed from the area. Officials will maintain a secure perimeter surrounding the incident site until debris cleanup is complete.

Unfortunately, chemical spills can occur without notice, which makes preparation a priority for state and local authorities. Purchasing the XSORB biohazard response kit can help officials remove dangerous chemicals from an accident scene effectively.

The kit features equipment and tools to help people with their cleanup efforts. Package items include antiseptic towelettes, plastic scrapers and tyvek coveralls with booties. Authorities can stay protected as they clean up and area with the affordable, convenient kit.
