Erosion recently uncovered a significant amount of trash at a golf course in Virginia.
Lambert’s Point Golf Club in Norfolk was built on a landfill and erosion – which was largely caused by Hurricane Irene – has caused that old trash to become unearthed, according to the Virginian-Pilot.
“A portion of the embankment appears to show signs of erosion,” a spokesperson for the city Public Works Department, Pamela Marino, said in a statement. “We anticipate the need for some immediate as well as some longer term repairs.”
The city has reportedly hired a consulting engineer and says it will fix the damage. If quick action is not taken at the site, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality could designate the golf course as an “open dump,” according to the news provider.
Golf course officials had initially categorized the waste on the shore of the Elizabeth River as storm debris but a closer inspection of the area revealed that in fact erosion was causing the problem.
