Erosion has turned a shallow creek in South Jackson, Mississippi, into a haven for mosquitoes, and residents have been waiting five years for a solution to this problem.
Since 2006, the depth of Hardy Creek has increased by more than tenfold in some places, when debris fell down a hill, blocking the stream, according to The Jackson Clarion-Ledger. The water level has caused an influx of mosquitoes, and the infestation has prompted many of the town’s inhabitants to contact the authorities.
Neighbor Jim Johnson told the media outlet that he has persistently contacted the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, but setbacks over permits and the design of solutions have prevented the implementation of a solution.
“The mosquitoes are the worst in my yard than they’ve ever been,” Johnson told the media outlet reports. “Kids play down there, and it’s eight, 10, 12 feet of water. It’s a wonder one of them doesn’t drown.”
