Two people suffered injuries resulting from an acid leak at Palm Bay, Florida, electronic parts distributor USBid Inc. on February 22, 2012. Local firefighters discovered the victims at the business after responding to reports of a chemical spill.
The leak occurred after the victims, USBid Inc. employees, were transferring nitric acid from one container to another. Less than one quart of the hazardous chemical spilled, but the nitric acid caused severe harm to the employees. One worker suffered hand and eye burns, while the other employee inhaled lethal vapors, and both required medical care. The company received a Fire Safety Report to ensure proper spill cleanup after the incident.
A nitric acid spill can put people and environments at risk, but spill kits include items individuals can use to reduce hazards. Many kits include XSORB acid neutralizing absorbent, a non-toxic, eco-friendly solution that offers people the opportunity to eliminate acid spills quickly and easily.
The non-leaching absorbent features a fast-acting formula that safely and effectively neutralizes most acids on contact. The easy-to-use solution allows individuals to sweep up a spill. The formula meets government regulations for landfill disposal, and is capable of absorbing up to 1.5 quarts.
