The beach existing at Tower Beach in Sea Pines and other areas on Hilton Head Island was eroded by northeasterly winds and strong tides in October. While this volatile weather has resulted in removal of sand and plants, it has also triggered renourishment projects, according to The Island Packet.
Scott Liggett, town director of public projects and facilities, told the media outlet that the loss of sand and vegetation caused by the storm might be troubling to some individuals, but the fact that Hilton Head Island is a barrier island means that it accumulates sand on a seasonal basis.
“It’s seasonal dynamics of the island’s beaches – the highest tides of the year, coupled with a steady on-shore wind, encroach upon a well established vegetated dune,” Liggett told the media outlet.
Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company is ready to begin a renourishment project involving the transport of approximately 1 million cubic feet of sand onto a 1 mile section of beach at Port Royal Plantation, Liggett told the Town Council on November 1.
