Residents worried about the erosion happening to the dunes existing on the north side of the Indian River Inlet might have their concerns alleviated by the sand bypass project that has been created to fix the problem.
The bypass project was initiated in 1989 and is based around the course that nature would take if no inlet existed, according to Delmarva Now. Although the setup worked effectively in July and August, its operations were hindered by various storms and equipment that stopped working. The operation was incapacitated for several weeks starting in September, NewsWorks reports.
“The bad news is (Hurricane) Irene hurt us like it hurt a lot of the coast,” Dan Brower of DNREC’s Division of Watershed Stewardship told Delmarva Now, adding a few weeks will probably be required for operations to be back to normal. “The normal beach profile is generally not as eroded as much as it is right now.”
Although erosion can significantly alter the environment, consumers can protect against its impact by using top products from Impact Absorbents such as Straw Wattle for Erosion Control.
