Officials told United Press International (UPI) they continue to make progress in a Yellowstone River oil spill investigation. The accident occurred in July 2011 when the Silvertip oil pipeline burst, spilling approximately 1,200 barrels of oil. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration noted it expects the incident investigation report to be released soon.
Exxon Mobil could pay more than $100 million in environmental cleanup fines due to the hazardous chemical release. Montana Department of Environmental Quality director Richard Opper told UPI that oil spills may occur, but companies can take steps to prevent them from becoming recurring problems.
