Local officials in Cayuga County, New York, have announced they will use state funds to help shore up a badly eroded stretch of land of the Owasco Lake Inlet in Locke.
The erosion was recently brought to the attention of the county by nearby residents and Owasco Lake Watershed Inspector Jessica Reinhart, according to Auburn Citizen.
Owasco Lake is the sixth largest of New York’s Finger Lakes and is smaller and shallower than many of the other Finger Lakes. Ron Podolak, Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) executive director, told the news agency that the banks along the inlet are eroding at three times the state average.
“It’s a tough stretch and it needs attention,” Podolack added. “The banks are really bad there.”
To ease up erosion, the state installed large flat rocks along the bottom of the shore and planted specific grass and plants to hold down the soil. Top products from Impact Absorbents such as ULTRA GutterGuards and Gravel Bads can also be used to help shore up erosion along bodies of water.
The work is expected to cost between $7,000 to $10,000.
