BP began employing oil spill cleanup methods at Petit Bois Island in Mississippi more than six months after the work was suspended by federal authorities.
According to the Mississippi Press, the National Park Service suspended cleanup efforts on March 1 to prevent humans from interfering with native birds during their nesting season.
BP spokesman Ray Melick told the media that the cleanup efforts are focusing on oil that is visible.
“There is product out there,” Melick said of the area. “There is oiled debris out there. There are tar balls we are picking up.”
The six-mile-long island was affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that resulted from the explosion and subsequent sinking of BP’s Deepwater Horizon Rig in April 2010. Eleven workers were killed in the incident.
Oil spill cleanup efforts have been underway for many months as workers and residents try to restore the Gulf.
