One dead, another injured in Wisconsin chemical spill

Officials are trying to piece together the exact cause of a chemical spill at a Theresa, Wisconsin, manufacturing plant that killed one worker and left another hospitalized.

WISN reports that the accident happened early in the morning on November 29 at Vivid Image Incorporated on Highway 28.

According to the news agency, 55-year-old Roman Torres and 65-year-old Thomas Persha were the only two employees at the plant at the time of the spill. Officials said the pair were working in an enclosed area of the building.

Joe Meagher from Dodge County Emergency Management said it appeared a glue-type material was accidentally mixed with another substance, which created deadly fumes.

“They both have inhalation hazards, they smell real bad and if you inhaled enough they would be of danger,” Meagher stated.

Hazmat work crews that were called in to help clean up the spill also had to be decontaminated. Protective gear from Impact Absorbents including Tychem TK 640 Deluxe Level A Front Entry Suit help limit exposure to potentially deadly chemicals in the event of spills and accidents.

Both workers were found unconscious at the scene of the accident when emergency crews arrived. Torres did not survive. Persha is listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
