Pennsylvania resident Robert Allan Shipman pleaded guilty to illegal dumping charges stemming from a 2011 incident, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Shipman was fined $100,000 for his criminal activity, and must pay $90,000 to the Pennsylvania Clean Water Fund and $10,000 to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. In addition, the state ordered Shipman and his wife to not apply for future permits from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The penalties follow a state investigation in which prosecutors discovered Shipman dumped more than 170,000 gallons of illegal waste into holes, mine shafts and waterways throughout southwestern Pennsylvania, reports the news source. Shipman ignored environmental cleanup regulations with his activity, causing damage to the region.
