Potential chemical spill in Indiana quickly resolved

On January 6, 2012, just northeast of Valparaiso, Indiana, two crew members onboard freight trains were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after three trains collided, according to The Chicago Tribune.

On the scene, emergency responders found the three trains had burst into flames.

Spillage or residual fumes from the train hauling empty ethanol tankers had the chance of emitting hazardous chemicals, but the effects or amount was unknown.

Officials stated that there was no evidence of hazardous materials escaping into the environment, as the trains were still engulfed in flames and smothered.

In situations where hazardous materials have the potential of reeking havoc on communities and the environment, officials need speedy cleanup solutions to quickly resolve the dilemma.
