Sorbents are categorized by what they absorb. For waterways, choosing the right type is critical. They come in various formats including pads, rolls, pillows, and socks, and booms.
Sorbent Types
- Oil-Only Sorbents (Hydrophobic): Typically made of polypropylene, these repel water but absorb hydrocarbons (oils and fuel). They float on water even when completely saturated, making them perfect for protecting shorelines and water bodies. (Usually color-coded White).
- Hazmat/Chemical Sorbents: Designed to absorb aggressive fluids like acids, bases, and unknown chemicals. (Usually color-coded Yellow).
- Universal Sorbents: Absorbs water-based fluids, oils, and coolants. Sorbent Formats
- Absorbent Socks: Long, flexible fabric sleeves filled with sorbent material. They are placed around a drain or across a pathway to divert or contain a liquid.
- Sorbent Pads and Rolls: Flat sheets used to quickly wipe up residue or catch drips near a waterway.
- Sorbent Pillows: Thick pillows used for high-capacity absorption in tight spaces or catch basins.
Spill Kits
When a spill happens outdoors or near a bay door, the main objective is diversion and containment. Spill kits include specialized tools designed specifically to keep contaminants away from water pathways.
- Universal Spill Kits: Water-based fluids, coolants, oils, solvents, and non-aggressive liquids.
- Hazardous Chemical (Hazmat) Spill Kits: Aggressive acids, bases, oxidizers, and unknown chemical compounds.
- Oil-Only Spill Kits: Petroleum-based fluids, diesel, motor oil, and hydraulic fluids while completely repelling water (hydrophobic).
Marine Containment and Recovery (For Waterways)
If a spill has already reached a stream, pond, or river, specific marine-grade equipment is required to stop its spread.
- Turbidity Booms: Floating barriers that corral floating oil, trapping the spill for skimming and clean up.
- Absorbent Booms: Large fabric sleaves filled with absorbent material for surrounding and trapping liquids on land and waterways. They typically have rope and hooks for connecting together and come wrapped with netting for increased durability.
- Loose Particulate Absorbents: Scattered on water or land to rapidly soak up and bind to chemicals. For waterways, use a hydrophobic floating particulate absorbent such as XSORB Select that can be skimmed off the top once saturated.
