Protecting the Pacific from Oil Spills

In March, President Biden designated 770,000 square miles southwest of Hawaii as a new marine sanctuary. That’s a lot of water. To put it in terrestrial perspective, this is an area larger than Alaska and Colorado combined, and three times the size of Texas, making it “the largest ocean area on the planet with the highest level of protection. And it will help us meet our goal of protecting and conserving 30 percent of our oceans,” Biden said.

One of the last pristine marine environments on Earth, this area is home to a network of islands and reefs where the waters are filled with the most diverse marine life on the planet: sharks, rays, marlins, tunas, turtles, whales, and ancient coral forests — many of which are threatened and endangered right now, but will be protected once the marine sanctuary is created.

Impact Absorbents is among many businesses in the environmental protection field that applaud the President’s decision, which expands on earlier marine protection designations by Presidents Obama and Bush in 2014 and 2009, respectively.

We’re doing our part to support the marine environment, with 13 categories of spill clean up and spill containment solutions specific for waterways. These include FiberDuck Oil Absorbent Pads, designed to absorb oil while repelling water either in water or on land. They’re available in three weights, and the brilliant white color is easily seen on water.

Booms are also a boon to marine protection. Consider our XSORB Oil Absorbent Booms, which are available in various lengths and remove all petroleum-based products in the marine environment, including holding ponds, boating areas, contaminated barrels, sumps, and more, leaving only clean water behind.

And when you need to handle a really big spill: drumroll, please: XSORB Oil Only Granular Absorbent in a 55 gallon poly drum is your answer. Able to safely absorb up to 47 gallons of petroleum-based products in the marine environment, XSORB Oil Only fully absorbs and permanently encapsulates oil, leaving the marine environment pristine once more. Plus, this product is one of many Impact spill solutions that have received Ecologo certification from UL, which recognizes the top environmental performers on the market.

Our oceans support life — including ours. Here’s to protecting them in every way we can.
