Public-safety is an ongoing concern in Orange Beach, Alabama, as severe erosion around the Alabama Point seawall continues to threaten passersby, AL.com reports.
A chain-link fence was constructed around the area to prevent people from falling into sinkholes. However, the barricade restricts access to one of the most popular tourist and fishing areas on the Alabama coast, the news source reports.
The fence stretches more than 1,000 feet southwest from the bridge and prevents people from getting within approximately 10 feet of the seawall. The Alabama Department of Transportation was in charge of designing and constructing these fenced-in areas.
“After I went down [to the seawall] and looked at it, I became concerned,” Public Works Director Kit Alexander said. “When there’s a potentially hazardous situation like that, we have to follow up.”
