Washington State oil leak spills 44 gallons near Ice Harbor Lock and Dam

An oil spill affected service at Washington’s Ice Harbor Lock and Dam on February 27, 2012. Dam maintenance workers reported the leak after replacing oil in three of the barrier’s six power transformer heat exchangers.

Staff members use a repair process to replace clean oil in the transformers, but oil escaped during the connection. A total of 64 gallons leaked from the dam, and roughly 15 gallons were recovered. In addition, 5 gallons remained in the oil transfer hoses, meaning a total of 44 gallons of oil were lost.

Cleaning up an oil spill can prove to be a daunting task for dam officials. Workers may be required to contain an existing leak with oil spill cleanup methods, while also finding ways to prevent future leaks. People can use FiberDuck Oil-Only Absorbent Pads to soak up oil in any environment.

The pads are available in light-weight, medium-weight and heavy-weight designs and feature a brilliant white color that is highly visible on water. What’s more, the absorbent pads also repel water. The product has been created to work on land and water, and can float while containing hazardous materials.
