We Are the Oil Spill

In recent times, whenever a catastrophic event, whether natural or human-created, makes headlines, social media rapidly makes memes that say something along the lines of, “We are all ____.” It’s meant to express empathy and unity, and does: for some reason, disasters pull us together.

Singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, renowned for his environmental activism as well as his musical talent, says humanity is responsible for major oil spills, though not in the way we typically suppose.

Explains Browne, “According to scientists’ estimate, the amount of oil used to produce plastic every day is the same amount as the oil that is spilling into the Gulf of Mexico every day [from a damaged drilling rig].

“And they point out that the plastic ends up in the same place — the ocean. So that means that we are the spill, or a spill of similar proportion to the uncontainable, disastrous spill in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Oil Spill Clean Up Solutions We Can Take Now

We find Browne’s thesis refreshing, and while his article is focused on what we can do to reduce plastic waste in our oceans, we know protecting our waterways from oil spills is equally essential.

Here at Impact Absorbents, we offer more than two dozen oil spill clean up solutions for the marine environment, from anti-static heavyweight oil absorbent pads, which absorb oil-based liquids, including jet fuel, gasoline, mineral spirits, and acetone, to FiberDuck Economy Oil Absorbent Spill Kits, which are hydrophobic and oleophilic toeasily, effectively and economically clean up oil-based spills on the spot.

XSORB Select Oil Absorbent Bilge Booms remove contaminated oil from the boat’s bilge, leaving only clean water behind, and our FiberDuck Oil Absorbent Socks do double duty, quickly absorbing hydrocarbons such as crude oil, diesel oil and gasoline in water or on land.

We applaud Jackson Browne’s commitment to making us all more aware of how to care for our planet, with simple steps such as eschewing disposable plastic bottles in favor of refillable stainless steel water bottles and home water filters. He’s an important voice for our waterways.

We’re equally committed to doing our part to protect the planet. After all, this is our only home. It’s going to be a little while before we’re ready to perform spill clean up on Mars.
