Truckin’: Tools for Spill Safety on the Road

Long-haul truck drivers have a lot to deal with on the road: their cargo. Their rig. Sleep deprivation. And the loneliness. It’s not a lifestyle for the faint of heart. So the last thing a trucker needs to worry about is a spill, or leak of any kind.

Fortunately, spill berms can help avert an environmental hazard. These portable basins, which can be pre-fitted with a disposable absorbent pad, catch liquid from an unexpected hydraulic leak for safe, quick spill containment. The durable polymer material construction has a special coating that can withstand a huge temperature range, from minus 65_ F to 130_F, making it ideal for travel conditions from Alaska to Arizona, and then some. Spill berms come in a variety of sizes, enabling you to contain anywhere from 15 to 94 gallons of contaminated material. And they’re easily stowed behind the truck seat or in the cab of most equipment.

What if you’re on the road, nowhere near a truck stop or other location where you can use the spill berm? Simple: plug the leak temporarily with a Plug ‘n Dike Pattie. As the name suggests, this premix putty “burger” sticks to any surface to immediately seal off a leak even if it’s on a dirty, dented or greasy underside of your rig. No surface prep needed, and Plug ‘n Dike is both non-flammable and non-toxic. Then as soon as you get to your stopping point for the night, you can pull out the spill berm and repair the hole properly.

While it’s not exactly like your best buddy’s along for the ride, Plug ‘n Dike and spill berm are companions you can count on. When you’ve been following the broken white line for many a mile, that’s no small comfort. As the Grateful Dead sang, “What a long strange trip it’s been”
