Environmental officials from the Washington Department of Ecology and the U.S. Coast Guard are reportedly examining the extent of the damage caused by a recent oil spill stemming from a sunken vessel.
According to The Associated Press, the 73-foot vessel, called the Justin, was being used as part of a bulkhead project in Puget Sound when it sank last week, causing diesel fuel to leak into the water.
The vessel has since been raised by a large crane and taken by barge to Tacoma to be fixed, the news source said.
Curt Hart, a spokesman for the Department of Ecology, told the Seattle Times that it was not clear exactly how much oil was leaked into the Sound, but the boat was carrying approximately 300 gallons of diesel fuel, 70 gallons of hydraulic oil and 50 gallons of lubricating oil.
Hart added that crews are currently engaged in a variety of oil spill cleanup methods, including using absorbent pads. Some of the best pads on the market are Impact Absorbents’ ColdForm Bonded Oil-Only Absorbent Pads.
