Police in South Windsor, Connecticut, said that two brothers who are accused of stealing a transformer from the state’s electric company are to blame for a hazardous materials spill after it leaked potentially toxic chemicals from the back of their pick-up truck.
According to the Stamford Advocate, the incident happened around 9 a.m. on November 8 when 46-year-old Robert Simmons and his 47-year-old brother Richard allegedly stole the large piece of equipment from Connecticut Light & Power.
The news agency reports that the men had spilled oil, which contained PCB’s, from the transformer onto their clothing and in their truck, prompting authorities to dispatch a local hazmat team to decontaminate the police care that was used in their arrest.
Many cleanup teams use gear such as Impact Absorbents’ Tyvek, MicroMax, Tychem and poly suits, chemical aprons, shoe covers, protective gloves, and face shields to help protect them in the workplace
The suspects were charged with larceny and held on a $1,000 surety bond. Officials said the brothers’ clothing and pick-up truck were also cleaned or destroyed as a result of the spill.
