With more than one dozen bottles of muriatic acid spilling out of a truck in San Juan Capistrano, lanes were closed recently on Interstate 5 in southern Orange County, California.
According to the Los Angeles Times, authorities were forced to close the northbound lanes of the freeway between the San Diego County line and San Juan Capistrano after a number of motorists collided with the bottles, spilling acid across the road.
Authorities said that the acidic chemical was so caustic that it made a mark on the surface of the freeway.
Captain Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority noted that the bottles scattered across the interstate caused confusion for motorists, the news source reported.
“People were outside walking around their cars all the way down the freeway,” he said. “It looked like people standing in line for a ride at Disneyland.”
According to the Orange County Register, no injuries were reported and nearby businesses were not evacuated, but a hazmat team did arrive on the scene.
