At approximately 12 p.m. on January 9, 2012, a nitric acid leak occurred in an outdoor bulk chemical storage area in Erwin, Tennessee, according to a press release from Nuclear Fuel Services.
The nitric acid was said to be quickly contained by a dike designed specifically for that purpose. In some instances, nitric acid has the potential of causing fumes that can be hazardous – like when mixed with water.
Officials were quick to contain the acid in the dike and transfer the containers to appropriate holding docks.
