Don’t Mondegreen Your Spill Clean Up!

Remember that Jimi Hendrix classic, Purple Haze, where he sang, “‘Scuse me while I kiss this guy”?

Or what about when Credence Clearwater Revival appeared to give directions to the necessary, with the lyrics, “There’s a bathroom on the right”?

Neither of these often-misheard lyrics is correct, though they’ve become so entrenched in popular culture they’re usually cited as examples of a phenomenon known as Mondegreens, which are misheard or misinterpreted song lyrics that alter the original meaning.

The term itself derives from a 1954 essay in Harper’s Magazine, in which the author heard the line of a famous poem as, “And Lady Mondegreen,” which was actually, “And laid him on the green”.

Mondegreens are often very funny. Hendrix’s actual lyric was, “‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky.” And CCR sang, “There’s a bad moon on the rise,” which makes sense, seeing as the tune is called Bad Moon Rising.

So while Mondegreens may bring hilarity among music and poetry aficionados, when it comes to spill clean up, it’s wise to seek out the correct products. A substitute won’t be so funny when it fails to effortlessly and efficiently clean up that oil or grease. It will be even less appreciated if it leaches a hazmat material. And what if the Mondegreen spill product isn’t environmentally friendly?
