This month, Impact Absorbents celebrates our 25th anniversary, thanks to you. Back in 1992, when the Tharp family began experimenting to create an absorbent product, they had one focus: to create the best, most effective, environmentally friendly spill clean up product on the market. That was product, singular. Today, Impact Absorbents offers more than 500 spill containment and spill clean up products to meet your needs, in numerous industries, from harbors and marinas, hospitals and food service, to raceways, retail, and emergency response and many more.
Like the best Silicon Valley success stories, it all began in a garage. Once the Tharps created our flagship product, XSORB Universal, they started filling orders as fast as they could manufacture it. Demand for the super absorbent, eco-friendly, residue-free formula quickly outstripped supply, and the family-run enterprise exited the garage for a 45,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Atascadero, California, that we still occupy today.
We were amazed at how popular our premier spill clean up product became. Within a year, we had a trio of distributors; by the end of the second year, that number grew to fourteen distributors selling 38 Impact products in 31 states. Today Impact serves a global market, with customer concentration primarily on the West Coast.
Did you know we’re also a woman-owned business? Pat Tharp stewards an environmentally responsible company that lives up to its name. Where there’s a spill, there’s an excellent chance the XSORB product line is on the job. For example, XSORB has been used:
- to clean up a nuclear dumpsite
- for numerous oil spills in oceans, lakes and streams
- by the National Hot Rod Association, CalTrans and the Washington State Department of Transportation for oil cleanup.
