Get Back to Health

Besides using Impact Absorbents’ excellent spill clean up products, we suggest following these seven ergonomic tips for preventing back pain and healing the pain you may already have:

  • Hit your knees. Yes, we know we just recommended an XSORB Spill Station to avoid kneeling. But this is different. If you sit for extended periods, the “prayer posture” is a good stretch for your back.
  • Emulate an octopus. When you sit in a regular chair, keep your legs moving: sometimes outstretched, sometimes bent, sometimes tucked under you. The important point is not to be sedentary in one position for too long.
  • Follow the bouncing ball. Balance ball chairs are another great way to keep your body moving. If you invest in one (or several, so employees can share), take a leaf from children and wriggle around on them. More bounce to the ounce means healthier hips and a happier spine.
  • Take a tip from Pavlov. Train yourself to stand at the sound of a bell in this case, your phone’s peal. Every time you make or receive a call, stand up and move about.
  • Start off on the right foot. Footwear has a lot to do with how you move, and whether or not you’ll develop back pain. Aside from fashion, choose quality footwear with good arch support. And don’t get “shifty”! Most people put the majority of their weight on the leg that feels most comfortable to them, which wreaks havoc on your body. Develop an equal opportunity mindset: treat both legs the same. Your body will be grateful.
  • Give yourself a lift. If your job (or that of an employee or co-worker) entails repeatedly lifting more than ten pounds, it’s imperative that you put these pointers into practice ASAP. Your body ought to be able to handle repeated lifting tasks without pain or injury it’s the muscle imbalances and postural misalignments that eventually lead to problems.
  • Lighten your load. Finally, reduce stress, which creates tight muscles and lowers your pain tolerance. Everything from deep breathing to a walk around the block, to talking out your frustration with a friend, can help.

When it comes to staying healthier and more flexible on the job, we’ve got your back!
